HPV Virus immunisation – Year 8

Dear Parents and Caregivers of Year 8 students,

As part of the National Immunisation Schedule all Year 8’s will be offered the opportunity to be immunised against the HPV virus at school.  This is a NZ schedule vaccine recommended to be given at 12 years of age. Students need two doses with a 6 month gap between dose 1 and 2.

The schedule dates are Thursday 6/5/21 and Wednesday 10/11/21

Information on the vaccine and a consent form will be sent home with your child. During Home room they will be shown a video with information about the immunisation. If you wish to see this video follow this link https://youtu.be/OuwcOyMjAzc

If you wish your child to receive the vaccination at school, please complete Section A1 and A2 of the consent form and return to your students Homeroom teacher.

If you do not wish your child to receive the vaccination at school or they have already received it, please complete Section B of the consent form and return to your students Homeroom teacher.

These vaccinations are also available free of charge at your GP. If you choose to get these done
at your GP complete section B and return to your students Home room teacher.

Auckland Intermediate schools Chess Checkmate Challenge

This week we had a team of 5 students represent AJHS in the Auckland Intermediate Schools’ Chess competition.

Kavin Nila and Okithya Nellagoda (Year 7 students) alongside Jessie Wei, Pamiru Gallage and Sai Govender (Year 8 students).

The students competed with other intermediate students from across the Auckland area in several rounds of  online chess.

The results were outstanding –  Sai Govender was awarded the “Highest gainer’ in the division. Individual honours trophies were awarded to the top three students in the competition.               AJHS taking away all of these trophies, Jessie overall first, Kavin second and Pamiru third.

We are proud to announce that Albany Junior High School came first in the overall competition, and will now represent the Auckland region in the National finals to be held in Rotorua later this year.

Well done!

Year 9 Food Technology Visit to Whipped Cakery

Last week the Year 9 Food Technology classes went to visit Whipped Cakery to analyse their food cabinet and products. Alyssa and Jay, the owners of Whipped Cakery, gave us a tour of their shop and kitchen, and answered our questions about their business and products. At the end of our visit the students were given the opportunity to buy one of their products to then carry out a sensory analysis on our return to school. We will be using the information from the trip to inform our development of a new product for the store. The best product from each of the 3 classes will be taken to Jay and Alyssa who will then choose their favourite to make and sell in store for a week.

We look forward to seeing what our students come up with over the next term and then seeing one of their unique creations for sale in store!

Sports News

Year 8 Swimming Sports
What a way to start the school year with Y8 Swimming Sports diving straight into it…literally!
The Millennium pool was buzzing with excitement to see who would be awarded with the first lot of Inter-whanau points. There were some stand out performances by Ian Kim and Mikelis Karehana who constantly battled it out at the top of all the boys events.  And, Ashleigh Fox won a clean sweep of events for the girls with Suyao Wong following closely in 2nd place.  Congratulations to Makomako who placed first overall, followed closely by Kiwi.

Athletics Day Year 9 & 10

After the Alert Level 3 lockdown for the Auckland region, our school was very lucky to be able to hold our annual Year 9 and 10 Athletics Day on Friday 19 February. And what a turn out!
The day was a huge success with students rotating around the different athletics disciplines. Congratulations to Makomako who placed first overall, but were closely followed by Kiwi. A special mention goes to Zak Kotze in Kiwi who won the 100m sprint for the fourth year in a row!

Congratulations to:

Hayden Thomson, who has broken the National record in Archery. He scored 528 points, beating the previous  national record of 525 points. This was a 28 round pro target animal shooting competition.  Hayden will now trial to break the world record in a few weeks time. Well done Hayden!

Xantaux Bouwer 10K2  currently plays for the Under 16’s (U16) North Shore Baseball Club.
Xantaux was approached by the U19’s coaches to participate in the 2021 Nationals Tournament  that was held late January 2021.   At 14 years of age  Xantaux was the youngest player in the U19’s team.  The team went on to win the tournament and walked away with gold medals. This was a great achievement, and an honour for Xantaux to have participated in such an event. Xantaux will also be participating in the U16’s Tournament being held in the first week of March.

NZ Opera in Schools Tour

We were lucky enough to have a visit from NZ Opera on Wednesday 24 February.

They brought Gaetano Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” to share with us, and it was a wonderful opportunity to see a live opera in action. Complete with singers, a pianist, set, costumes and props, the talented team entertained our Year 8 students, bringing opera into the 21st century.  A cameo by our very own Mr Allan topped off a memorable performance
