MUSIC
Students have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of musical instruments through our instrumental tuition programme and we have 14 itinerant music tutors who come into the school each week to run these.

A wide variety of co-curricular groups are offered to students. These include several Rock Bands, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Band, 2 Guitar Groups, Flute Group and Choir. Performance opportunities include the KBB Music Festival, the Big Sing, Smokefree Rock Quest, Battle of the Bands, Variety Concerts, Showcase and Cabaret evenings, as well as multiple community concerts.

SPORTS
Albany Junior High students take immense pride in their sport and their school. We cater for this thirst for knowledge and experience with our Sports Academy for Year 9 and 10 students. Year 8 and 9 students apply for a much coveted position in our Academy where we endeavour to nurture and develop elite performers of the many sports that we offer at Albany Junior High.

We currently have and cater for all students performing to a high standard in their respective sport from representative up to International level.

PERFORMING ARTS
Performing Arts of music, drama and dance, learners are able to receive tuition in a variety of musical instruments, learn drama skills with ‘Shakespeare’s Globe, New Zealand’ in Wellington (the local and regional finals of the Sheila Winn Shakespeare Festival are held at AJHS each year), and perform in showcases.

VISUAL ARTS
In visual arts education, students develop visual literacy and aesthetic awareness as they manipulate and transform visual, tactile, and spatial ideas to solve problems. Students explore experiences, stories, abstract concepts, social issues and needs, both individually and collaboratively. They experiment with materials and processes to develop their visual ideas within a range of practices across drawing, sculpture, design, painting, printmaking, photography, and moving image.

  • To provide a vehicle for the students to learn more about each other and to understand and tolerate our differences. As a result of these camps we find students make unexpected friendships.
  • To give the students opportunities to increase their self esteem, to develop leadership skills and teamwork skills.

INTERNATIONAL

AJHS openly celebrates that our campus comprises some 40 different nationalities and cultures. We regularly host visiting school groups from Japan, China, Thailand, and Korea who experience schooling in New Zealand and we also warmly welcome students from all over the world for long term stays. Our International Team is here to support the students, with staff who have the ability to speak Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, French, and Thai.

We pride ourselves in developing a nurturing and caring environment for our students and provide excellent support for our international students, in terms of academic achievement, ESOL programmes and pastoral care. The well-being and happiness of our international students is paramount to us.
