2021 Rugby – Are you in year 8 or 9 and interested in playing rugby for AJHS in 2021. Please get in touch now so that we can start building a squad for 2021. Email:

Rugby is offered at College (year 9 and 10) level for regular winter competition for both boys and girls grades. Year 7 and 8 students play at their local clubs but there are opportunities for them to play in the Intermediate School Zone Days and 7’s rugby festivals (See details under Sports Opportunities)

Each year our priority is to have our own AJHS team but if we don’t have sufficient numbers then we do work with surrounding schools to either have a combined team or find places in teams to ensure that players can play rugby. In the past few years we have had a 6th grade combined team with Kristin and Long Bay which has worked well for all involved.

Competition Details:

Year 9 and 10 teams play in the North Harbour Rugby Secondary Schools Competition played in term 2 and 3. Dependent on numbers AJHS has the opportunity to enter team(s) in the following grades:

5th Grade Under 15 (open weight) or Under 16 and Under 55kgs

6th Grade Under 16 and Under 60kg

7th Grade Under 15 and Under 52kg

Ages are as at 1 January 2020

Games are played on a Saturday morning usually at 9.30am or 10.40am at North Harbour Schools on a home and away basis.

Under 15 development grade with games being played on a Friday afterschool.

It is expected that our rugby trainings will train twice per week. Training will be held before or after school with training days and times confirmed once teams and coaches confimed.

Teams will be provided with the AJHS rugby jersey for the season. Players will be supplied with AJHS rugby shorts, socks and a mouthguard as part of their registration fees. Boots and any other individual rugby specific equipment is the responsibility of each player.

Registration Fee:

To be advised – but between $100 and $200 per player. (This is dependent on team)

Community Involvement:

Each year we endeavour to enter AJHS boys and girls rugby teams into the college competition but this is dependent on the numbers of players available to play and the availability of coaches and support people for the teams. We do require a large community involvement to make rugby possible for our students. If you are interested in being involved please contact

Some organisations now have a policy in place that requires participants to be fully vaccinated. For each event we will provide details of the requirements on the registration form.
