Science

At AJHS we pride ourselves on running an truely hands on Science program for students in years 7 to 10. Our learners gain a wide range of practical and team working skills during their lessons in our well equipped laboratories. We aim to foster a life-long curiosity for Science in a world where scientific skills and understanding are increasingly vital.

Our courses follow the New Zealand national curriculum and cover all the Science strands: Living World; Material World; Physical World; Planet Earth and Beyond, and The Nature of Science.

As well as core Science, students are able to select options in: Human Biology; Forensic Science and Environmental Science, in years 9 and 10.

We offer many opportunities for learners to develop and apply scientific concepts outside the classroom. Every year we run a wide range of visits. Recent trips include: Mangere Mountain; Stardome; Auckland Medical School and an overnight camp at Tawharanui.

The school also hosts a regular stream of visiting speakers and exhibitions such as the Science Roadshow; Sir Peter Blake Marine VR experience and an astronomy evening.

Students are encouraged to design and carry out their own investigations and we enter teams in events such as Epro8 and the North Harbour Science Fair.
