Farwell to Josh Tagaloa
On Thursday 12th November, it was with sadness that we farewelled Josh who has been a lead youthworker here at AJHS over the past  3 years.

Josh has been a key part of our Youthworker team, working closely with students and also volunteering his time to help with Yr 7 Boys Raptors Basketball team and the Junior Boys Basketball team.

Josh is leaving us to start his teaching career working with young adults, and we wish him every success!

Class 8T10 – Food Can Drive  – you can help

Two students at AJHS – Natalie Stillwell and Zoe Clements – have decided to shave there heads for cancer. They are shaving there hair off to support cancer patients on the 5th of December. They want to help find more effective treatments to save lives and make sure people with cancer get the support they need to get through. Did you know that seven people will discover they have blood cancer today? That’s a scary statistic.
So, we need your help!
Please sponsor Zoe and Natalie for this great cause. It’s simple, fast and totally secure. Just go to https://shaveforacure.co.nz/t/okatainarangers and donate your chosen amount then Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand will email you a receipt.
Thank you to GDR Ltd for sponsoring Natalie and Zoe, go to https://www.gdr.co.nz/ or contact them at 0800 30 70 50

Summer Reading

Summer reading—it’s important!   Research shows that students who read four or more books over the summer are better prepared for the coming school year and do not go down the ‘summer slide’—the loss of reading and learning skills during the summer break.

Pupils returning to AJHS in 2021 may borrow up to 15 library books over the summer holidays.

Just grab a permission slip from the library, the student desk or here

Return signed permission slip to the library by 27th November

Select your books and collect after 3rd  December

Year 10 Business Academy Trip to Vertical Adventures
The Year 10 Business Academy finally got to visit Vertical Adventures to learn about the ins and outs of running a business. Our trip had been delayed by Covid-19 three times! Darrin, the owner and entrepreneur at Vertical Adventures told us his start up story and gave us all a reality check about the hard work and many challenges that are encountered when running your own business. He talked about cashflow, marketing, dealing with the competition, employment, health and safety, business structures and so much more. In between his talks we got to climb his amazing rock walls and test our courage and abilities. It was a great day of consolidating our learning from the year.
Sustanability Expo
Year 10 Students presented their solutions to a myriad of sustainability problems our world currently faces. Students have been engaged in an inquiry in to a sustainability issue of their choice and have researched the latest and best ideas and technologies to solve these pressing issues facing planet earth – from our oceans being fished out, to asteroid mining, from synthetic textiles to native New Zealand skinks and birds, our students have learned a lot about planet earth and its longevity issues. After submitting their research reports, students then created a model to demonstrate the best solution to the problem they have researched. Teachers were mightily impressed by what our students came up with.
Year 9’s Compete in North Island ETHICS OLYMPIAD competition
On Wednesday18th November  8 students participated in the middle school Ethics Olympiad competition. This is the first time AJHS has entered the Ethics Olympiad and it was an amazing opportunity to express our critical thinking skills in a competitive and across school environment. Students were energised, motivated and enthusiastic as they took part. To enter the competition students research eight separate ethical case studies and practice their team work and critical thinking skills for several weeks prior to the event. Then on Wednesday they competed in four heats via an online zoom call.  Results have not been announced yet, however, whatever the outcome, we learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to discuss these issues.
Congratulations to the following students on being selected to represent AJHS in this event:
  1. Miwa Bartley
  2. Sean Dodunski
  3. Danica Kane
  4. Sam Le Noel
  5. Oscar Liu
  6. Arissa Muhammad Raufie
  7. Luca Verryt
  8. Sebastien Vos

Science Fair 2020 – Massey University

On Friday 13th  November, some of our Year 8 students walked down to Massey University to present their Science Fair projects at the North Harbour Science and Technology Fair 2020.

We received great feedback from the judges regarding the student interviews and are excited to hear the final results at the prize-giving taking place on the 1st of December.

Our students made us proud, completing these entries despite lockdown and still delivering high-quality work. Thank you to all our amazing students that participated in this event.

A great thank you to Shylaa and Enric who were our photographers for this event – we truly appreciate it.

9PAAC Recording Studio visit and Show

This year, a number of Year 9 students were chosen to be part of a new course called the Performing Arts Academy. During the course, students learned a variety of skills used in the media industry such as Lighting, Sound design, Music production and Stage makeup. These students have used these skills to write their own show to present at the end of the year. Select students from the Year 9 Performing Arts Academy class had the amazing opportunity to visit a recording studio to record their material for their end-of-year show.

For most students, this was the first time they have recorded sound with a sound engineer. Students entered a soundproof booth to record. The sound engineer would cue them in, record them and give them instructions of what they need to fix for their next take. The student in the booth would then tell the sound engineer how they felt about their take and anything they want added or changed. The sound engineer would then “comp” the clips together – removing any unwanted sound and adding the best parts of each take for the final product. Sometimes in a recording setting, things may change on the spot and you have to be adaptable and responsive to these changes.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the show “Detention… with a twist” on Tuesday 24 November at 7pm in the PAC. Tickets $10 (includes a drink and finger food). Limited spaces so don’t miss out. Email sunmyoung.kim@ajhs.school.nz for bookings.

On Wednesday 11 November our very own Clickbait travelled to Avondale College to compete in the long-awaited Bandquest competition.
