Year 10 French Breakfast

What a lovely way to start Term 4, with a French breakfast last Saturday for the Year 10 French students, at La Tropezienne.

The students got to order their breakfast in French and ask how much it cost.  The French waitress was very kind and spoke to each student individually.  They also enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere with their teacher, Madame Leeuwenburgh. Vive la France.

Year 9 camp

At this year’s camp for Year 9s, we had an unforgettable experience. We travelled to Camp Benson on Kawau Island.

There was a beautiful beach that we explored in kayaks, a huge hill to climb where we overlooked the island, and so many team challenges and adventures. The atmosphere was electric, and all through the team building and stargazing we got to spend the most exciting week together. The teachers and volunteer parents all helped to make it possible, and I’m very grateful for them and all they did. Each year the camp seems to get more exciting, and we cannot wait for next year.

William Pike Talk
The Y7s & 8s were fortunate to hear Kiwi adventurer and explorer William Pike about his life at a recent School assembly.
Available at student accounts is William’s autobiography (cost is $30 each).

Every copy comes personally signed by William!
In Every Day’s a Good Day, William not only shares his story of beating the odds on Mt. Ruapehu but also writes about his active childhood and teen years, when his love for adventure, sport and the outdoors was fostered by family, friends and teachers. Even after losing his lower leg, William continues to find joy and inspiration from tramping, mountaineering, cycling, kayaking and diving.
For William every day really is a good day.
AJHS Mock Elections
Year 9 & 10 Social Studies students participated in mock elections last week as part of our civics education and our Year 9 study of government and democracy.  The Year 9 students ran the election by using our ‘electoral roll’ where students had to pre-enrol to vote.  On voting day students used our school electoral roll to register voters, to make sure no one voted twice, and distribute voting papers. Other students guarded the ballot boxes and all classes participated in counting the votes with scrutineers carefully monitoring the counting.

The AJHS results remarkably mirrored our nation’s weekend election with Labour gaining 45% of the party vote and National gaining 27%. Greens were 11%, ACT 6%.  We also voted in the referendums with the End of Life result being Yes 74% and the Legalise Cannabis result being No 52%. We will have to wait a couple of weeks to see how accurate their barometer is for these referendums.

Students have learned a lot about how the election process works and how to understand policies, parties and MMP. The Electoral Commission provided us with voting papers and ballot boxes to make our learning experience as authentic as possible – we are grateful for their resources. Students will now be revising their graphing skills as they make bar graphs and pie graphs using the data.

Year 9 Business Academy
Year 9 Business Academy students have been learning about entrepreneurs and innovation. To apply the the theory we designed, innovated and built ‘vegetable cars’ and took part in a vegetable grand prix. Some vehicles looked really good, but fell apart, while others had both good design and function. It was lots of fun and a great way to apply our learning too.
“Guest Speaker wanted – Human Resource / Recruitment Expert”
Our Year 10 Business Academy class is seeking a guest speaker to talk with us about the recruitment process and what an HR manager does. If you are experienced in this area and willing to visit us as a guest speaker, please contact kaye.mckean@ajhs.school.nz

VR Views Beneath the Waves

The Sir Peter Blake Trust visited AJHS Science classes this week. Students learnt about the amazing variety of life around New Zealand’s shores, and what we need to do to protect this national treasure.

The virtual reality headsets gave students a 3D experience of this underwater word without getting wet!

Science Fair 2020
This year some Year 8 students will be entering in North Harbour’s Science Fair.
They are hard at work, investigating various questions and compiling their results for our students and parents to come and view in Week 3 of this term. This will take place in the Makomako Atrium between 3pm and 5pm on Tuesday  27th of October – please come and support our Year 8’s.

The final entries will be sent through to Massey University.
All the best to our participating students.

Year 9 Environmental Studies

This week the Year 9 Environmental Studies students walked down to Lucas Creek Tributary for water testing.  As our Kaitiakitangi (Guardianship) project, we are monitoring the health of our local stream with various other schools to ensure continuous monitoring throughout the year.

The students conducted the tests themselves with support from several Science teachers.
Thank you to everyone who was part of this program
Y9 Mandarin class Wushu workshop in AJHS:
With the Experience Asia Funding supported by Asia NZ Foundation, we invited Wei Zhao, head Wushu coach of  New Zealand Kungfu Wushu Federation to come to AJHS to teach our Y9 Mandarin class Wushu (Martial Arts).
Our Y9 students have learned the history and cultural background of Wushu. They know that traditional Wushu has 3000 years of history and modern Wushu was established since 1949. There are four key principles of Wushu: Peace, Health, Friendship, and Nature. They also learned a few routines of movements and how to use cudgel to do self-defense.

Some quotes from our students:
I have learned that it’s more of discipline as opposed to a form of combat.”
“Wushu has been designed to stop the conflict and war, not enhance it.”
“I learnt how to defend myself, how to attack, and how to hook.”
“I learned that wushu has been practiced around for all ages and the different weapons and their use.  The different stances are very interesting”
New Zealand Chinese Language Week Celebration in AJHS

New Zealand Chinese Language Week is a Kiwi-driven initiative launched in 2014. NZCLW is designed to increase Chinese language learning in New Zealand. The first of its kind in any Western country, NZCLW seeks to bridge the cultural and linguistic knowledge gap between China and New Zealand by delivering fun and practical initiatives that assist Kiwis to learn Chinese. As it is a popular event in the national calendar, we have organized many activities in different year levels in AJHS this year. Y9 students researched information about Mid-Autumn Festival (Mooncake Festival)  and made a poster about it. Y8 students made a booklet about the legend of the Mooncake Festival and used play dough to make mooncakes. Y7 students write Chinese characters and made a Chinese name bookmark. Whanau classes watched the NZCLW videos to learn some useful Mandarin phrases and played Kahoot games. We also have an NZCLW theme display in our school library.

SHOWQUEST on SCREEN CONGRATULATIONS!!!

We are delighted to announce that AJHS has won two of the awards in ShowQuest on Screen 2020 – “Most inventive use of live sound” and “Most innovative use of lighting”! We are incredibly proud of the following students who led these areas: Aryan Thakkar, Milo Lindsay, Theo Bould, Aaron Ko and Zachary Saunders for their amazing work on the original music, ably recorded by Logan Gardiner; and Sam Redgrove and Elliott Borland who put together a dramatic and inspired lighting sequence, earning our school these titles over 67 other schools and 2800 students nationally.

A massive congratulations to the entire team who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to write and record this original story under the guidance of Miss Sutton, Mr Allan, Miss Lee, Mr Kim and Bruce Stewart. Our young performers came up with an emotionally charged, compelling story about being true to yourself in a year when the many disruptions to our programme posed challenges we never dreamed would arise when we first embarked on the journey. Special mention must be made of Year 8 student director Mackenzy Waters who has risen to the challenge with a keen sense of storytelling, truly remarkable resilience and resolute determination. A special thanks to our Year 10 student mentors, Paige Cresswell, Caitlin Saunders, Paris McDonald, Mickey James, Kaden Areias, Liam Back, Ashlee McLeod and Enric Legasto.

Well done to all those involved in this remarkable achievement.

MUSIC “DAY” 16 SEPTEMBER

A celebration of some of our exceptional musical talent took place in the PAC on what was to be our third Music Evening of the year. More performances were held on the deck outside the Music block at lunch time, and students could enjoy watching their talented peers perform in a more informal setting outside in the sun while eating their lunch. More performances have continued throughout the week and the piano and brass students will round off the term with a shared lunch and concert in the Performance Space on Friday 25 September.

Full credit to the many talented musicians at our school who have made so much progress this year and retained a sense of purpose and enthusiasm, even in the absence of a live audience to perform to. Rest assured musicians, there will be plenty of opportunities ahead to showcase your amazing talents and hard work so keep up the awesome efforts!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ASHLEE McLEOD

A group of AJHS staff and students were lucky enough to attend the NSPA production of “Beauty and the Beast” at Centrestage Orewa during the recent school  holidays. It was a fantastic show and Ashlee is to be congratulated on her authentic character interpretation and charismatic stage presence. Well done, Ashlee!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO GRACE ALLIS

A massive congratulations to Grace Allis whose original song “15,000” has been selected for inclusion on the 2020 SUSO compilation album. Grace has won a recording session in a professional recording studio for her creative efforts and performing prowess!

This is truly well deserved recognition, Grace!

Sports Zone Days:

WATER POLO WINTER FESTIVAL TOURNAMENT:  Congratulations to our Year 7 and 8 water polo team that played in the winter festival tournament last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The team had an outstanding weekend going through pool play winning 4 from 4. They unfortunately lost in the semi final but finished the tournament with a really tight match going down 6-5 to finish in 4th place.  Thanks to coach Keith and manager Rachel for all that they have done for this team and also to Maegan for the videos and also thanks to the parents that assisted with transport.

CRICKET ACA CUP COMPETITION:  Over the past 2 days our Year 7 and 8 cricket boys have been playing in the ACA Cricket Cup competition.  After a tough loss on Tuesday, the boys bounced back with 2 good wins today over two different Rosmini teams. A massive thanks to Mr Macpherson, James and Victoria for the great job looking after the team.

GIRLS BASKETBALL ZONE DAY: Well done to our year 7 and 8 girls basketball team that took part in the basketball zone day earlier this week. There were some tough matches for the girls but they finished in 8th place.  Thank you to coach Haymon and also to Ameesha for taking on referee duties for the day.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL ZONE DAY:  We had 2 Year 7 and 8 girls teams competing in the volleyball zone day in the first week of term. Both teams performed really well with the AJHS A team finishing in 6th place, and the B team finishing in 9th =.   Thanks to our student coaches and referees Cartina, Arabella and Lilly, and to Mrs Morkel for coaching and organising the teams.  Thanks also to the parents that assisted with transport for the day.

Sports Opportunities:

TOUCH RUGBY:   Due to a couple of withdrawals we have a couple of spaces available in our Year 7 and 8 touch rugby teams.

We are also looking for coaches for a number of our boys teams. Games are played on a Tuesday night for Year 9 and 10 and on a Thursday night for Year 7 and 8. Coaches are asked to take one training per week, and attend the games each week.

If you have any queries about joining a Year 7 and 8 team or you are interested in coaching, please contact Jo Monkton jo.monkton@ajhs.school.nz
