Sports News
Our winter sports teams are all back in action, it’s been so fantastic to see so many students representing the school across so many different codes. We hope that everyone has a fantastic term of sport and if you aren’t involved in a sport, get in contact and we may be able to find something that suits you.

Netball Zone Day Success:   On Wednesday our Year 8 Team 1 and Year 7 Team 1 competed in the North Harbour Intermediate Netball Zone Day held at Netball North Harbour. This is the first zone day since Term 1, so was exciting to have our teams out on the court.  Our Year 8/1 team made it all the way through to the finals, but went down to a very good Carmel side.  They  finished 2nd overall from a tournament of 17 teams.  An awesome effort which now qualifies them for Auckland Interzone Champs.   Our Year 7/1 team also had an amazing day, finishing 3rd in an extra time nail biter, beating Murray’s Bay in their playoff match.

A massive Thankyou to our coaches Megan and Darrin, to our umpires Anika and Emily and to the parents that assisted with transport and looking after our teams today. 🏐

Sports Opportunities:   There are a few sports where we require some additional players. These are regular after school competitions that will run weekly either over Term 3, or Term 3 and 4. If you are interested in getting involved in any of the following sports, please get in contact. They have all just started for the term so plenty of time to get playing.

Basketball – Year 7 and 8 Boys – We need additional players for both our Year 7 and 8 boys teams. Games are played on a Monday evening (between 4pm and 9pm), and trainings are held at school either before or after school depending on the team. Games start on Monday the 3rd of August. Competition is for Term 3 and Term 4.

Table Tennis – Year 7 and 8 – We need one additional player. Games are played on a Wednesday at North Harbour Table Tennis Stadium, 5A Akoranga Drive, Northcote from 5pm to 7pm. Competition is for Term 3 only.

Table Tennis – Year 9 and 10 – One additional player is required. Games are played at North Shore Table Tennis, Active Zone – Glenfield on a Friday night from 5pm to 7pm. Competition is for Term 3 only.

Year 8 camp

This year the Year 8’s went to camp at Totara Springs Christian Camp. At camp, there were so many different activities you could do. They were all fun. Some of the activities we did were the flying fox, crate climb, paintball slingshot, archery, abseil tower, rock climbing, low ropes, initiatives, go karts, slug guns, hool, hydroslide, orienteering, team rescue and so many more. There were two extra activities which were done at night which were the burma trail and a campfire.

The food at camp was delicious. Our favourites were the wraps and the hot cakes. We both really enjoyed having hot chocolate in the morning with breakfast before our activities.

We all had a great time. In our opinion, we would recommend this campsite to schools seeking an amazing time. We would love to go back there because it was funny to see people serve the food and we’d really like to try everything again – it was an awesome experience!

Explode the moment – Crate Climb

I was slowly stacking the crates, one by one, as sweat piled up in my hands. My partner Nicole was handing me the crates as myself and my tower were wiggling everywhere. That was not good. My heart was pounding, almost out of my chest! My nose was filled with the horrible musty smell of a long rolled up piece of old carpet that was sitting on the side of the gymnasium floor. I could hear Nicole and some of my other group members cheering me on. I was onto my 10th crate!

At this moment, my crate tower was wobbling like crazy. I forced the grey crate through my shaky legs and placed it on the top of my teetering pile. I looked down and realized I was really high above the ground. Just as I was about to place my legs on the top crate, Nicole said something hilarious that, now thinking of it, I don’t remember. I started cracking up so badly that my stomach hurt. Then in a blink of an eye, I was tumbling forwards. CRASH! All my crates scattered across the wooden floor and I was left there, hanging in my harness. I heard a whole bunch of laughter. To make matters worse, Nicole started swinging me in circles so I was spinning around and around and I was getting very dizzy. When I finally stopped turning around, my vision was blurry and everything was circling me.

My group teacher, Mrs Betterton, started lowering me and I hit the ground with a thud. My legs were trembling and I definitely knew that I could have done better but I was so happy to have made such an amazing memory, and I would have done it for a second time if we had the time to. It was my favourite activity as well as the Burma trail. Let’s just say, I screamed a lot.

Year 9 Environmental Science

Thank you for Anna Baine from Auckland Council who came to talk to our Year 9 Environmental Science students last term. They saw first hand how pest control traps work and how to set them themselves. Anna also brought in some taxidermy mounts for the students to see the actual sizes of some animal species.

We discussed the impact pest species has on our ecosystem and interpreted our data collected from our tracking tunnel ink cards.

Thank you to all the Environmental Science students who has made last semester unforgettable – enjoy your next option subject.

Y7 Parent Pop In – Wednesday 1 July 2020
On Wednesday 1st July  Year 7 parents were invited to pop in to our classrooms and atriums to have a quick korero with their child’s Homeroom teacher, as well as to celebrate and acknowledge our Year 7 students efforts in their first Inquiry Project as Year 7 learners at AJHS.
We were incredibly pleased to invite our community in to see how much effort our students put into their learning.  Our Year 7’s were very proud of their work and the acknowledgement from their parents and Whanau helps encourage and motivate future learning through Inquiry.

Thank you to all of those that were able to join us for this event.  We look forward to another successful Inquiry later in the year.
